Sophisticated US weekly magazine founded 1925
by Harold Ross (1892-1951), which contains
general articles, fiction, and cartoons. It
has nurtured many writers, including Dorothy
Parker, James Thurber, J D Salinger, John
Updike, and S J Perelman. As editor Ross was
succeeded 1952 by William Shawn (1907-), who
was replaced 1987 by Robert Gottlieb (1931-),
then president of the publishing firm Knopf,
The New Yorker having been bought 1985 by the
Newhouse conglomerate, owners of Knopf.
